In modern times, cell phones have made distances non-existent, allowing us to talk to people on the other side of the planet, whether by voice or image.
And not only that, today with cell phones we can visit places with just a tap, meet people, order things, pay bills and even turn our cell phones into a card. It’s incredible how much we’ve advanced in technology.
And who invented the cell phone?
Considered the father of the cell phone, Martin Cooper was born in 1928 and was an engineer at Motorola.
He created the world's first cell phone in 1973, it was called Dynatac 8000X, and it weighed almost a kilo, 793 grams to be precise.

Martin began working on leading the development team for the first cell phone around 1970, and when the time was right, the working prototype took 90 days to be ready.
And of course, as it was the first cell phone in history, it was extremely simple, it didn't have a display, we couldn't send text messages or browse the internet. The device was like a telephone, but without the cord, making it mobile.
It was 33 centimeters by 8.9 cm and 4.4 cm deep, the Dynac took up to 10 hours to charge and its battery only lasted 30 minutes.
The first call was made by Martin Cooper himself, in New York on April 3, 1973. And it was made to Motorola's competitor who had a similar product idea.
When it arrived on the market it cost around 3,995 dollars, it was very expensive for the time and continues to be.
When did cell phones arrive in Brazil?
In Brazil, the first cell phone arrived on our shores in 1990, and just like the first in the world, it was also from Motorola.
The device was the Motorola PT-550 and received the affectionate nickname “brick”. And just like the Dynac, it was very simple, but this time with a small display and an antenna.
If it were sold today, the device would cost around R$15 thousand reais, which is equivalent to more than half the value of an iPhone 14 Pro Max.
The first device from the biggest brands
As we know, Motorola is a pioneer in the cell phone market, with the Dynatac 8000X launched in 1973, it contained only 12 buttons, volume, and lock for accidental touch.
Another brand today, the Samsung, launched its first cell phone in 1988, the SH-100 model was extremely inspired by the Motorola cell phone.
Apple arrived on the cell phone market in 2007, the first iPhone brought new trends and technologies to the market. It had a 2 megapixel camera, multitouch technology and you could choose your storage version.
That's the story of cell phones in our world, but there's still so much more than we can say about it. It was a long way to reach the devices and smartphones we have today.
